Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is a form of cold therapy that involves exposing the body to extremely low temperatures for a short period, typically between 2 to 3 minutes. The treatment is typically administered in a specialized chamber or cryosauna. Liquid nitrogen is used to achieve temperatures as low as -200°F (-130°C) in the chamber.

During a WBC session, the individual stands in the cryo chamber, with their head above the cold air, to avoid inhalation of extremely cold temperatures and liquid nitrogen vapors. The skin's surface temperature rapidly drops, triggering vasoconstriction, a process where the blood vessels narrow, and blood is redirected away from the extremities to protect vital organs.

As the session concludes, blood vessels dilate, and oxygenated blood rushes back to the extremities, creating a hormetic effect (beneficial controlled stress). This is believed to stimulate the release of anti-inflammatory molecules, endorphins, and other biochemicals, which can promote healing, reduce pain, and improve overall well-being. Additionally, the sudden exposure to cold may also increase metabolic rate and aid in burning 400+ calories. Again, all this takes place in 2 to 3 minutes!

Whole body cryotherapy has gained popularity among athletes and fitness enthusiasts as it may help with muscle recovery, reducing muscle soreness, and enhancing performance. It is also used for various other purposes, including pain management, reducing inflammation in certain chronic conditions, and improving skin conditions.

While many people can benefit from WBC, it is essential to consider potential contraindications and precautions. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as cold allergies, Raynaud's disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and heart conditions, should avoid whole body cryotherapy. Pregnant women and those with certain skin conditions or infections are also advised against undergoing this treatment.

Before trying whole body cryotherapy, it is crucial to consult the medical team at Infuze MD / The Superhuman Clinic.
