The Truth About Glutathione

Almost every day since 2010, my patients have asked me what all the buzz is about glutathione.

  • What is it?
  • Is it safe?
  • How does it brighten or lighten skin?

Today I’ll give you all the answers…

What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a naturally occurring and very powerful anti-oxidant. It’s actually produced in our very own bodies! Our bodies need glutathione to stay healthy and help prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. In fact, glutathione is used to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.

Is Glutathione Safe?

For decades we’ve known how good antioxidants are for keeping our bodies healthy. Since glutathione is the mother of all antioxidants, it is not only safe, but almost EVERYONE needs more glutathione. Oxidative stress, toxins, poor diet, and lack of exercise all cause damage to the cells so we need antioxidants like glutathione to protect our cells.

How Does Glutathione Brighten or Lighten Skin?

Skin lightening is actually a side effect of higher levels of glutathione in our bodies. For decades, physicians have been using high doses of intravenous glutathione to treat patients for Parkinson’s disease. Not only were patients’ health improving, but their skin started to have a glow. Patches of hyperpigmentation started to even out, and their overall complexion began to lighten and brighten! And so, the cosmetic uses glutathione IV began.

Glutathione helps to lighten the skin in a couple of different ways. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin its color, produced by the activation of the enzyme Tyrosinase. Glutathione binds to Tyrosinase and helps prevent the enzymatic pathways from producing melanin. The second is a much more important role. Glutathione helps to prevent the activation of Tyrosinase by reducing free radicals in the body that can activate it and cause an increase in melanin production.

It is important to remember that the cosmetic effects of glutathione are a side effect of elevated levels in our bodies. It takes high doses, time and numerous sessions to effectively elevate glutathione. Once we can safely elevate glutathione levels, it will first get to work in improving cellular health. Once glutathione has improved cellular health, only then will the skin lightening effects appear.
