Does Sugar React With Cancer Cells?

When discussing cancer and cancer cells, there’s a lot of useful information on the internet today, and unfortunately, there is a lot of unhelpful information as well. At Infuze MD in Milpitas, we want to provide, accurate details on cancer for all of our patients, especially in regards to their health and wellness. We want to promote a stable, healthy immune system for every patient. To do this, we practice integrative medicine and integrative cancer therapy. Today, there are a lot of misconceptions or myths about cancer cells and sugar intake. Many people ask, does sugar react with cancer cells? Is sugar good or bad for cancer cells? Infuze MD wants to be your source for science-based information, especially involving cancer cells. Together, we can combat cancer with a more integrative approach!

Does Sugar Feed Cancer Cells?

It is a common misconception to think that all sugars are bad for the human body. In reality our body and all of the cells within it, function and use glucose (blood sugar) for energy. A healthy diet includes natural sugars from fruits and vegetables and other carbohydrates. That being said, there is research which suggests high sugar diets may increase one’s risk of cancer. We must determine the difference here. A high sugar diet normally consists of excessive processed sugars found in food and beverages like sodas, fast food, and packaged foods. The main problem digesting high amounts of sugar on a daily basis is the weight gain and obesity associated with sugars. This then in turn increases insulin and other hormone rates, ultimately putting the human body out of balance. At Infuze MD, we believe this is the source of many illnesses and we wish to take a more integrative approach to medicine by encouraging and living a balanced lifestyle. If your lifestyle is not balanced, we can assist with a treatment like a vitamin C drip to boost your immune system and overall health. Vitamin C given intravenously  can be especially beneficial against cancer cells too.

Should I Eat Sugars?

To promote a life of health and wellness, Infuze MD suggests consuming a diet of low natural sugars. Studies show that those who eat fewer sugars long term tend to have an overall healthier lifestyle, specifically for a person dealing with cancer. If we provide our bodies with wholesome, natural foods, we will receive the vitamins and minerals we need to increase our immune system and fight off current illnesses. For cancer patients, we want your body to be balanced hormonally and physically; this means being in the best possible condition, a healthy weight, and consuming a natural, diverse diet.

How Much Is A Healthy Amount?

We know that it can be difficult to only consume natural sugars. Therefore, we recommend a low amount of added sugars. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 2015 stated that the average person should only consume 10% of their calories from added sugars, this is about 200 calories or 50 grams. To put this in perspective, a 12 ounce can of soda contains 40 grams of added sugars. It can be quite easy to lose track of your added sugar intake. For a cancer patient, this is what we want to avoid. Infuze MD recommends steering clear of sugary beverages and packaged foods that get a large number of their calories from sugars and sugar substitutes.
